It is with deep sadness that family, friends, and the Dargaville community mourn the passing of Pita (Peter) Mako, affectionately known as “Pūhā Pete,” who tragically died following a pedestrian crash on State Highway 12 at the intersection of Murdoch Street and Colville Road in Northland on June 4, 2026.
Peter, aged 58, was struck by a vehicle in the early hours of the morning and sadly passed away at the scene. His sudden death has left his family and community heartbroken as they remember a man who was actively turning his life around and building a brighter future.
Peter was remembered by his sisters as a man with a kind heart, a strong spirit, and a growing determination to make positive changes in his life. Known locally as “Pūhā Pete,” he was a familiar and well-known figure in Dargaville, respected by those who knew him for his honesty, humour, and openness.
In recent times, Peter had been working to rebuild his life, showing dedication and hope for a better future. His family say he had “more to offer the world,” and his loss is felt deeply by all who knew him.
Peter is lovingly remembered by his sisters, extended family, friends, and members of the Dargaville community. His personality was described as warm, approachable, and resilient, leaving behind memories that will be cherished forever.
